Don Cherry

"You people... love our way of life, love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada," Don Cherry, a hockey broadcast legend ranted in his Coach Corner segment on Monday, targeting the Canadian immigrant community.

I am one of Cherry's attacked immigrants. I've never bought a poppy, nor have I paid tribute on Remembrance Day to fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for my adopted country. Just as Cherry said, we enjoy Canada's blue skies and clean water, love its milk and honey, but have never given a thought to the lives laid down to build this magnificent country.

For many immigrants like me, the cultural gap and our limited exposure to Canadian military legacy prevent us from knowing and loving Canadian veterans. They are very different from us, born a separate ethnicity, speaking a foreign language, and fighting an unfamiliar war. We knew little about Passchendaele front, and how tens of thousands of Canadian soldiers died in this tragic WWI battle. The war zones buried in our memories were fed by Communist Party of China’s propaganda machines, such as Triangle Hill and Yalu River. The hero we honored was Huangjiguang, who hurled himself against a machine gun to block the enemy fire in the Korean War. Our admired veteran was Lei Feng, a selfless and modest soldier who devoted himself to the communist cause.

But the cultural gap would prevent us from being a contributing member of Canadian society. Despite our inadequate knowledge about Canadian heritage, we love Canada, and we strive to become a full Canadian and take pride in what we have achieved. We've paved our immigrant journey through blood, sweat and tears, and established a thriving life in Canada by overcoming challenges.  Not only have we reached a real self-sufficient life in this adopted country, but we have also groomed our next generation for success. We are not freeloading aliens but hardworking taxpayers and proud Canadians.

Cherry's anti-immigrant rant has met with a widespread denunciation in Canada. Most Canadians defend us newcomers by condemning it of inciting cultural disparities and of feeding a xenophobic mentality of "us v.s them." They recognize our achievements on our immigrant journey, appreciate our efforts in growing the Canadian immigrant society, and value our contributions to the Canadian economy.

Feeling like a full Canadian can be an elusive goal, said Apon Basu on Twitter, but the two little words "You People "are hurtful and wiping out the incremental gains newcomers made in pursuing that goal. "There is no such thing as 'you people,' but there is only 'us,'" said Michael Grange.

The outpouring support and solidarity for us new Canadians revealed in Cherry's controversy has attested to the Canadians' generosity in embracing us all hailing from different parts of the world, regardless of our culture, race, or religion. It has also shown how blessed we are to live in this privileged country, enjoying the diversity and inclusion the multicultural society has to offer.

This heartfelt love and support from Canadians has enhanced my sense of belongings to Canada. It has motivated me to take the nation's history and legacy as my own and push me to make more remarkable efforts to reach the goal of becoming a full Canadian. Even though I am not wearing a poppy today, we feel fulfilled for making one step forward towards that goal.
