中英对照：从目前来看，加拿大打新冠的安排很不顺

It is the responsibility of the Federal Government of Canada to secure enough COVID-19 vaccines to cover the entire population of 38.44 million Canadians. While a COVID-19 vaccine is available for adults, the child version is still in clinical trials.

Canada has purchased 20 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine — enough to vaccinate 10 million Canadians. The shortfall will have to be covered by other approved vaccines. These other vaccines deliveries are delayed for one reason or another at the moment.

On March 3, Canada received an initial shipment of 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine – under the brand name “COVISHIELD” – manufactured at the Serum Institute of India. While a total of 300,000 of those doses have an expiry date of April 2, the rest are good to use until the end of June.

With the expiry date coming up within a month, the provinces got into action immediately to organize their usage in a most expedient fashion. On March 22, Ontario started the “Pharmacy pilot” program. Selected pharmacies in the public health units for Toronto, Windsor-Essex County, Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington were booking appointments for AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for eligible people 60 years old or older in 2021. This causes a stir for people in the Senior category and many wanted to sign on the program.

I was one of those who wanted to participate. I went onto the Ontario Government web site and located 20 injection sites with addresses, web sites and telephone numbers after I entered my postal code. Of course, the web sites had no specific features to make appointments. Telephone calls were not answered or simply not getting through. Finally, I visited a couple of places and was told that appointments had stopped due to a shortage of vaccines. So all of this run around for nothing! Eventually, I called a few places outside of our designated lists and was able to book appointments. One week later, we have yet to get a call back from these places.

Fast forward to this week – on March 31, York Region started its vaccination program for those who are 65 years old and above. On March 30, all the ward councillors from York region notified all their constituents of the above campaign. Full of enthusiasm, I clicked onto the link (www.York.ca/covid19vaccine) referenced by my ward councillor as soon as the appointment booking start time commenced.

As it turned out, “over 65 years of age” is just one of eight groups of people eligible to book an appointment. After giving my Ontario Health Card and contact information, I was informed that “We are unable to confirm your eligibility to book vaccine appointments.” and “If you think you are eligible, visit the vaccine support page”. This despite of the fact that the computer system showed my name on the Health Card, indicated that it has accessed the Health Card system and should be able to verify my eligibility. Looks like I am back to square one and have to wait for their call or contact by email.

我个人的看法是，疫苗预约系统的构思和设置太差，这给申请人带来了不必要的烦恼和焦虑。

 

My personal conclusion is that the vaccination appointment system is poorly conceived and created and thus giving applicants unnecessary frustrations and anxiety attacks.

 

3月30日，欧洲出现罕见的血栓病例。根据加拿大免疫咨询委员会（NACI）的建议，加拿大的10个省都暂停了给55岁以下的人打阿斯利康疫苗。有报道说，有些人打了阿斯利康疫苗后出现了与血小板低有关的血栓。

 

On March 30, all 10 provinces pressed pause on the vaccine’s use for people under the age of 55 in accordance with the National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendation relating to reports of blood clots in Europe as a result of rare cases of serious blood clots that have been associated with low platelets have been reported in Europe following use of AstraZeneca vaccine in those populations.

4月底，加拿大将收到只需打一次的强生疫苗。希望安大略省和其他省份能够在本周阿斯利康疫苗过期之前将此疫苗全部打完。

 

Canada will also start receiving shipments of Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot COVID-19 vaccine at the end of April. Let us hope that Ontario and other provinces will be able to reach their goal of using the AstraZeneca doses before the expiry date this week.
