中国政府干涉纽约政坛选举，加国不能放松警惕！（观点，中英对照）

The New York Times recently published an in-depth investigation revealing how the Chinese government, through its consulate in Manhattan, mobilized local community groups to influence New York City politics. According to the report, Beijing-aligned associations helped defeat candidates who supported Hong Kong democracy or Taiwan, and backed others more sympathetic to the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) positions. The report highlighted several unsettling cases that show just how aggressive Beijing’s tactics have become in the United States.
作为美国公民兼退役陆军随军牧师的熊焱，就是其中一个典型案例。早在1989年天安门广场学生运动中，他作为学生领袖，便已被北京列入“通缉要犯”名单。几十年后，当他在纽约竞选国会议员时，一名中国情报人员策划破坏其参选。根据美国检方的信息，该特工甚至提议出资设下美人计，或雇人对其殴打，目的就是让他“无法参选”。与此同时，当地一些在中国领事馆压力下的同乡会也积极配合，对其选战进行阻挠，最终导致熊焱竞选失败。
One case involved Yan Xiong, a U.S. citizen, pastor, and retired Army chaplain. As a student leader in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, he had already been placed on Beijing’s list of “most wanted” dissidents. Decades later, when he ran for Congress in New York, a Chinese intelligence agent plotted to derail his candidacy. According to U.S. prosecutors, the agent even suggested paying a woman to entrap him or hiring thugs to beat him so he “cannot run.” At the same time, local hometown associations under consulate pressure mobilized against him. His campaign collapsed.

Another striking example is Iwen Chu, a Taiwan-born New York State Senator. After she attended a reception with Taiwan’s president in 2023, the Chinese consulate summoned community leaders and later pressed her directly during a meeting at a Brooklyn café. Soon, hometown groups that once supported her switched sides, throwing their weight behind a challenger instead. Chu lost her seat in 2024—an outcome community leaders later admitted would not have happened had she avoided the Taiwan event.

This may appear to be just a story about New York’s Chinatown politics. But for Canadians, it should sound a loud and familiar alarm. In New York, City Council candidate Wai-Yee Chan was targeted by disinformation on WeChat, a tactic eerily similar to what former B.C. MP Kenny Chiu faced in 2021. Old photos of Chan at a Hong Kong democracy rally were circulated on the platform, where pro-Beijing community leaders accused her of supporting “violent Hong Kong independence.” Groups that had once backed her quickly withdrew their support and swung behind her rival instead. She lost — much like Chiu, whose defeat in British Columbia was also fueled by coordinated disinformation spread through WeChat. Both examples show how Beijing exploits trusted diaspora platforms to punish dissent and tilt democratic outcomes.
在加国人士担心特朗普对加的贸易关税会损害就业、产业以及家庭财务的今天，与特朗普的贸易战几乎覆盖了加国新闻报道。然而，随着经济焦虑占据公众视线，对外国势力，尤其是来自中国的干预的关切，却逐渐淡出焦点。但这种警觉的松懈，才是真正的危险。
Today, Canadian headlines are dominated by Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff threats against Canada. Understandably, Canadians are anxious about how these trade measures could damage jobs, industries, and household finances. Yet as economic anxieties take center stage, the issue of foreign interference, especially by China, has faded from the spotlight. That lull is dangerous.
这些纽约政坛的案例警告我们：绝不能放松警惕！加拿大必须加强透明度，保护弱势社区免受虚假信息的侵害，并确保民主选举是加国自己的事，而不会遭到怀有专制野心的外国政府的操纵。
The chilling reminder from New York is this: vigilance must never lapse. Canada must strengthen transparency measures, protect vulnerable communities from disinformation, and ensure that our elections belong to Canadians — not to a foreign power with authoritarian ambitions.
