Silicon Valley job offers lose its appeal among aspiring engineers

A job offer from Silicon Valley tech giants provides everything that a millennial can dream of, allowing them to claim a bragging right of being the top talents in an industry that has reshaped the economy and the world. Apart from decent salaries and quirky benefits – from nap pods to free lunches, the job title comes with a prestige that is unravelled in the global workforce. However, the recent moral scandals have revealed the dark side of an industry deemed to have brought positive influences on the society, leaving current Silicon Valley employees and future recruits feeling disillusioned that the seemingly beautiful career isn’t what they thought.

Last month, Facebook designer Westin Lohne announced on Twitter that he had quit. “Morally, it was extremely difficult to continue working there as a product designer,” he wrote.

In fact, the tech industry has been dealt with a series of blows of ethical scandals that have deeply hurt its reputation. Last year, a female Uber engineer made shocking allegations of being sexually harassed by a manager, who was allowed to get away with it because he was a high performer. Her viral blog has drawn a flood of complaints from Uber employees that exposed the company’s sexist, chaotic and aggressive culture fostered by the company’s senior management.

Cellphone addition has dealt another moral blow to the tech industry. Studies have found smartphones have caused collective mental health issues due to society’s unending needs to stay connected. However, younger generations who have lived most part of their lives with the internet are more prone to cellphone addiction crisis, facing higher risks of committing suicide and experiencing depression and other mental health conditions.

The crisis affects not only the technology users – those who are often treated as numbers on dashboard by a tech companies, but also industry builders who are burned out from long stressful work hours, facing tight deadlines to meet performance targets. Grappling with addiction, social isolation and other mental health conditions, many have to seek help from doctors, psychiatrists and therapists.

“They’re coming into my office – millionaires, multimillionaires, 30 years old… They are saying:’ I don’t know how to connect with people. I have everything and I have nothing,’ ” said a psychotherapist in San Francisco.

The recent Cambridge Analytica scandal that has left 87 million Facebook users’ privacies compromised has only fueled the moral crisis the tech companies are facing, damaging their public image as a prestigious and socially positive company. With enthusiasm from aspiring engineers to work for Silicon Valley firms being eroded, many have ruled out a career at some top tech companies.

“There are some companies that I could never see myself working for at this point, like Facebook or Google, that in my mind are companies I barely want to use as a consumer any more,” said Albie Brown, an IPhone app builder as a teenager and a freshman studying computer science at Stanford.

If a job at technologies like Google and Facebook are still the most sought-after roles around, it has lost its appeal among those who are morally conscious and who value ethics and corporation social responsibilities.

“My son got into Google!” a proud mother posted on Wechat group. Instantly, praising and congratulating posts flooded in. But mixed with the feelings of admirations and envies behind these posts, there is a growing sense of distain.
