How Covid-19 will change cruise ship travel?
Bob Mok

Ever since I wrote about the changes that may be applied to air travel as a result of COVID-19, my friends started asking me to research into future changes that may affect those who enjoy cruises.

I love cruises myself and have taken on many cruises over the last few years. My scheduled cruise across the Atlantic this April was cancelled along with the connecting European cruise. These cruises are non-refundable, and deferment vouchers covering the period up to the end of 2021 were issued.

What are we to expect for changes to cruises in future? Many of the changes have already started during the early part of this year before COVID-19 brought everything to a halt. Let us go through the list of items predicted by the experts working in the industry.

Everything will be very similar to the new routines for air-travel when you start your journey. There will be questionnaires, temperature checks, and swabs or blood test to verify status of your health before boarding.

Once on board the ship, masking may be necessary for events when large crowds are gathering. The crew will be wearing masks and/or protective shields to keep themselves healthy and minimize the risk of infecting their clients. While there are no current medical regulations in place, sick passengers are likely to be confined to their rooms and only released when the cruise is finished.

Cruise lines will be making investments in their onboard clinics. Expanded services will include more doctors and, potentially, quarantine areas. Having a designated area where vacationers can report to can provide peace of mind to all travellers.

Within the next two years, COVID-19 vaccinations will be widely available to travellers. Once immunized, a card attesting to this injection will be available and it becomes another vital piece of document necessary for travelling, whether flying or cruising.

The chances of viral infection is statistically equal whether you are going on a one day cruise or ten. However, people are more comfortable with shorter excursions rather than long ones. Short cruises will be the trend in the near future. Travellers will test the waters by easing into shorter cruises first since they are more hesitant (initially) to commit to long vacations.

One of the biggest attractions for cruises is the food. The buffet and the hotel style dinners are something to crave for. The value of food available on a cruise will be worth $60 to $70 per person per day. The enormous selections and the many cooking styles make for wonderful visits for breakfast and lunches. All of that are changing!

Ordering off a menu or placing your order via an app on your cell phone may be the new standard. My friends reported being served by restaurant servers after ordering buffet items from a menu earlier this year. The Cruise Lines Royal Caribbean has removed buffet from their ships already.

On the bigger cruise ships, advance reservations for dinners and shows are already part of the routine. In future, this will simply be the norm. It is necessary to maintain social distancing in many areas and this means less people can be accommodated, resulting in a pain for those who want to see a specific performance on a specific night at a specific time.

The practice of “Knock and drop” will happen to room service. This type of contactless service will be applied to the ordering of food to your room. There will be a limiting of capacity when cruise ships start sailing again. Only 50% to 60% of their previous capacities will be allowed. People over the age of 70 would not be allowed to buy a ticket unless they had a doctor's note saying they were fit to travel and did not have "a severe, chronic medical condition."

Everyone who is boarding at the same time as a booking group will be treated as a “party” and social-distancing requirements are waived. For this reason, people are likely to book family size suites so that they can enjoy a private balcony without worrying about infection. Inside the cabin, mask wearing would be exempted and hence many people would rather spend most of their time inside.

Initially, there will be far fewer cruise ship and travelling routes to choose from. Not all ships and not all time slots will return immediately. It will take time before schedules are ramped up and back to normal.

If there is anything positive about the future of cruising, it will be that cancellation and refund policies will be more flexible. travellers don't want to be responsible for a full ticket if they are suddenly diagnosed with COVID-19. The cruise lines will hire Travel advisors to provide cruise education to travellers. During the booking process, they will explain the new guidelines and making sure clients are properly prepared with their personal travel documentation.

The future of cruising will be very different from what we are used to in the past. Will I be cruising again? You bet your boots I will. I still have a couple of deferment vouchers to cash in!
