Opinion: As American toxic gun culture festers, more Asians will turn into firearm perpetrators

For immigrants from countries where civilians never own a gun, the American widespread and constitutionally protected gun ownership is a cultural shock. Most newcomers from China held a grudge against gun owners when they arrived in North America, terrified by the weapon's almighty power to kill. But their attitude towards guns has markedly changed as they are increasingly under the threat of the American widespread gun violence and influenced by civilians' reliance on the weapon for protection.

It might take only a few trips to a shooting range to overcome fear and appreciate guns' ability to eliminate imaginary enemies instantly. The omnipresent shooting range in the US, dubbed as facilities to "practice skills for self-protection," provides ample opportunities for novel users to get familiar with guns and ignite their desire to shoot. I had a shooting experience when I visited Atlanta, Georgia, in 2010, where I practiced shooting using an AK47 assault rifle – the world's most widely used firearm. After firing a few magazines with several rounds, the fear gave way to the feelings of chill and thrill, and I left the shooting range excited, wanting to go back again and do more.

But shooting is not limited to pulling the trigger at a target stand or a cardboard silhouette, and Asian Americans' contact with guns has quickly gone beyond merely a shooting range. The rapidly soaring gun violence in the US, which increasingly targeted Asian American community during the pandemic, has prompted the ethnic group to view gun ownership in a new light. Over 600 mass shooting incidents have taken place in the US each year since 2020, resulting in over 4000 deaths and injuries, and many Asian Americans were among the casualties. Gun-backed groups have exploited Asians' vulnerabilities and fear of US firearm violence to advance gun ownership, leaving many Asians to believe the peace of mind that guns bring outweighs their potential dangers and that owning a gun is the only safe way for self-protection.

A significant cultural change has transformed the community that previously despised gun ownership. Research shows that Asian Americans, with the lowest gun ownership in the country, experienced an explosion in gun purchases during the pandemic. Chinese Americans' gun ownership rate surged by 43 percent in recent years – with more than half of gun buyers being first-time owners – turning the demographic into a rapidly growing force in gun ownership in the US.

The soaring gun ownership rate is associated with a surge in firearm crimes, which saw a growing number of Chinese Americans using the weapon to kill those from the same ethnic background. In 2021, Weiwen Chou, a 68-years Chinese gunman, opened fire on a Taiwanese American church congregation in Laguna Woods, killing 11. A mass shooting inside a Monterey Park dance studio during the Lunar Chinese New Year killed eight, with the suspect shooter being the 72-year-old Chinese gunman Huu- Can Tran. A few days later, 67-year-old Chunli Zhao started a deadly gun rampage at northern California mushroom farms, killing 7, marking the 3rd mass shooting inside the Asian community within a few months.

As members of an inherently peace-loving community, Chou, Tran, and Zhao didn't turn into violent gun criminals overnight. As the toxic American gun culture festers, a growing swath of the community will empower themselves with guns, inevitably leading to more joining the ranks of firearm offenders.
