Unlike Carney, who has held top global economic posts and steered nations through financial crises at the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, Poilievre lacks any international negotiation experience. Canadians know the next prime minister will face steep tariffs, protectionist threats, and unpredictable White House demands—and many simply don’t trust Poilievre to stand firm.

In a startling admission, Smith said she told Trump administration officials to “put things on pause” regarding the current tariff standoff—fearing that ongoing economic tensions were helping the Liberals and hurting the Conservatives. She went on to say that Poilievre’s perspective would be “very much in sync with … the new direction in America.”
