Opinion (Chinese-English) Why Pierre Poilievre Is Perceived as the Leader Most Likely to Kowtow to Trump

A recent Ipsos poll conducted for Global News revealed a striking insight into Canadian public opinion: Pierre Poilievre is seen as the federal leader most likely to “roll over and accept whatever President Trump demands.” In contrast, Mark Carney, the newly elected Liberal leader and former central banker, is viewed as a tough negotiator—the one best equipped to secure a favourable deal for Canada in a potentially hostile Trump era.

This perception gap isn’t incidental. It’s rooted in political style, lack of experience, and—most recently—associations that have drawn public concern.

Poilievre has built his brand on fiery populist rhetoric, often mirroring the tone and tactics of Donald Trump. While Poilievre’s combative style energizes his base at home, his reluctance to apply that same toughness toward Trump doesn’t inspire confidence in his ability to negotiate with a foreign leader known for economic bullying. Unlike Carney, who has held top global economic posts and steered nations through financial crises at the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, Poilievre lacks any international negotiation experience. Canadians know the next prime minister will face steep tariffs, protectionist threats, and unpredictable White House demands—and many simply don’t trust Poilievre to stand firm.

That perception hardened this past week, thanks to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s eyebrow-raising comments during an interview with the right-wing U.S. outlet Breitbart. In a startling admission, Smith said she told Trump administration officials to “put things on pause” regarding the current tariff standoff—fearing that ongoing economic tensions were helping the Liberals and hurting the Conservatives. She went on to say that Poilievre’s perspective would be “very much in sync with … the new direction in America.”

To many Canadians, it sounded like a provincial premier lobbying a foreign government to interfere in Canada’s election by softening punitive measures until after the vote—to boost the candidate she favours. It also reinforced the impression that Poilievre would be far more amenable to a Trumpian agenda than is acceptable for a leader tasked with defending Canada’s sovereignty.

Poilievre didn’t help himself by endorsing Smith’s demands, including the removal of emissions caps and granting Alberta unfettered pipeline access. In doing so, he further cemented the ideological alignment between himself and Smith—and, by extension, with Trump-style governance: “Drill, baby, drill!”

Canadians aren’t naïve. They understand the power imbalance between Canada and the U.S., especially under a second Trump presidency. But they also know that capitulating has never been a winning strategy. Standing united as a country—regardless of province or party—is essential when dealing with a protectionist White House. Any apparent attempt to undermine a national approach in favour of partisan politics strikes many as reckless.

In this climate, Canadians are sending a clear message: the next prime minister must be someone who will stand up to Trump, defend Canadian industries, and protect the country’s sovereignty—not someone perceived to be ideologically cozy with Washington’s far-right leadership.

Any candidate seen as sucking up to Trump is unlikely to earn Canadians’ trust, let alone their votes. As the Ipsos poll shows, a growing majority is turning to Carney not only for competence—but for independence and strength in the face of foreign pressure.
